Chapter 02 — Airport Intelligence

London Airport Chauffeur Guide:
All Five Airports, Terminal by Terminal

Exactly where to find your chauffeur, how long transfers take to every major London area, what changes in 2026, and what to know before you land — for each of London's five major airports, in complete detail.

London is one of the very few world cities served by five substantial international airports — each with its own character, terminal structure, carrier mix, and transfer logistics. Understanding the differences between them is not merely interesting: it directly affects how long your journey takes, where your chauffeur meets you, and how much preparation your transfer requires.

This guide covers every major London airport in detail — pickup zones, terminal intelligence, realistic journey times to the key central London areas, and the practical differences that experienced travellers use to reduce transfer friction. As of 2025, over 302 million passengers passed through UK airports, with Heathrow alone setting a new record of 84.5 million. Understanding your airport properly is not optional preparation — it is the difference between a smooth arrival and a stressful one.

All journey times are realistic estimates accounting for typical conditions. Actual journey times from any London airport vary significantly based on time of day, day of week, and traffic. Your chauffeur will track live conditions and adjust routing accordingly.

Heathrow is the largest, busiest, and most complex of London's airports — and by a significant margin. Its four active terminals serve different carriers and are not all accessible from the same road. This is the single most important piece of information for chauffeur collections: always confirm the specific terminal at the time of booking. Your chauffeur cannot be in the right place if the wrong terminal is on the booking.

Which Airlines Use Which Terminal

Terminal 2 (The Queen's Terminal): Star Alliance carriers including United, Lufthansa, Swiss, Air New Zealand, Singapore, TAP, and others. Also handles several other non-alliance carriers.

Terminal 3: American Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, Delta, Qantas, Cathay Pacific, Emirates (some flights), and other carriers. Check your boarding pass — AA and Virgin have historically been here.

Terminal 4: KLM, Malaysia Airlines, some Aeroflot/international routes. Accessed via a separate spur road from the main ring road — your chauffeur must take a different route than for T2/T3.

Terminal 5: All British Airways flights (the largest single-airline terminal in the world). Iberia also operates from T5. Accessed from the M25/A30 on the western side of the airport.

The Chauffeur Collection Process at Heathrow

At all four Heathrow terminals, professional chauffeur collections happen in the arrivals hall — your chauffeur will be waiting with a name board. Allow 45–60 minutes from your scheduled landing time as a realistic estimate for reaching your chauffeur: disembarkation, the immigration hall (which can be extensive at T2 and T3 for non-EU arrivals), baggage reclaim, and customs clearance all add time. Any reputable chauffeur service tracks your flight in real time and builds this time into their schedule.

For departures, a standard recommendation is to arrive at the terminal 3 hours before international flights and 2 hours before European departures. Factor your journey time from collection point plus a 15-minute buffer for airport drop-off and check-in desk queues.

Peak Hour Warning: Heathrow to central London during weekday morning rush (7:30–9:30am) and evening peak (5:00–7:30pm) can add 25–40 minutes to all journey times. Your chauffeur will use live traffic routing, but departure timing matters — book with a buffer or allow for realistic journey time when scheduling meetings on arrival days.

Gatwick is London's second largest airport and the world's most efficient single-runway operation. It serves the south of England and handles a significant volume of long-haul leisure and business routes alongside European traffic. Two terminals — North and South — are connected by an automated transit shuttle, but they are physically 8–10 minutes apart. Always confirm which terminal your flight arrives at before travel.

North vs South Terminal — Key Carriers

South Terminal: The larger of the two. Serves easyJet, British Airways Gatwick routes, TUI, Vueling, and several others. Most long-haul and business routes tend to be South.

North Terminal: Norwegian, Wizz Air, Jet2, some charter routes, and others. Generally handles lower-cost European and domestic routes. Smaller, faster to navigate.

2026 Drop-Off Fee: Gatwick Airport increased its terminal drop-off charge to £10 (up from £7) from January 2026. This applies to vehicle drop-offs in the terminal forecourt. Reputable chauffeur services include applicable drop-off charges transparently in their quoted fare — confirm this at booking.

Stansted officially broke 30 million passengers in 2025, solidifying its position as the major gateway for European budget travel. As the primary base for Ryanair, it serves more European destinations than any other UK airport. It operates from a single terminal — which makes collection logistics straightforward, but the M11 approach from central London can be slow during peak hours.

Despite its budget-carrier reputation, Stansted handles significant business traffic on short-haul European routes — and its single terminal makes it one of the faster airports to exit after landing. Your chauffeur will be waiting in the arrivals hall, which is immediately accessible after baggage reclaim in a single-level structure.

Luton is London's fourth largest airport and serves primarily budget carriers including easyJet, Wizz Air, Ryanair, and Tui. A new terminal building opened in 2024, replacing the previous facility with a more modern structure and improved passenger flow. Luton's approach via the M1 is vulnerable to significant congestion particularly between junctions 6A and 10 during weekday peak hours — factor this into departure and arrival timing.

The single terminal makes collection logistics simple. Your chauffeur meets you in the arrivals hall. For passengers heading to North London addresses (Islington, Highgate, Camden, Hampstead), Luton offers some of the most direct road connections of any London airport — the M1 runs almost directly into the north of the city without requiring a crossing of central London.

Fastest Exit~20 min after landing
Primary UsersBusiness travellers

London City is the closest airport to central London and the fastest to exit after landing. Its short runway and steep approach are famous; they are also what keep it exclusively business-focused, with a passenger experience that is noticeably different from the other four airports. No leisure charter flights. Very few families. Mostly business travellers who know exactly where they are going. The single compact terminal means immigration, baggage reclaim, and the arrivals hall are all within a few minutes of each other.

For City of London, Canary Wharf, and the financial districts, London City Airport is the obvious choice when flights are available. The time saving versus Heathrow on the full door-to-door journey can be 60–90 minutes — a meaningful difference for executives with tight schedules. The airport also has faster immigration processing than the larger terminals, particularly during off-peak hours.

London City serves British Airways, KLM, Aer Lingus, American Airlines (via BA), and a small selection of other business-focused carriers. It does not serve long-haul routes outside of BA's New York JFK service — which was launched specifically for this airport's business clientele.

London City's Unique Advantage

Industry studies by Blacklane and similar operators have confirmed that London City is the fastest airport to exit after an international flight — often under 20 minutes from landing to being in a car. By comparison, Heathrow typically requires 45–60 minutes to clear immigration and reach arrivals. For time-pressured executives, this differential alone often justifies the carrier choice.

Essential Knowledge

Airport Transfer Tips:
What Experienced Travellers Always Do

Always Provide Your Full Flight Number

The single most important piece of information for an airport chauffeur booking is your complete flight number — not the airline name, not the departure time, but the specific flight code (e.g. BA0293, LH0902, EK0004). A professional chauffeur service uses this to track your flight in real time, automatically adjusting your collection time for delays, early arrivals, or aircraft swaps. Without it, you lose this protection entirely.

Confirm the Terminal — Every Time

Airlines change terminal assignments. Flights that habitually use one terminal at Heathrow or Gatwick occasionally move. Your boarding pass will confirm the terminal — check it the day before travel and pass the information to your chauffeur service. A confirmed terminal at booking is a starting point; verify it before the journey.

Build Realistic Time Into Arrival Day Meetings

The most common cause of chauffeur-related stress is not the transfer itself — it is the meeting booked too close to a landing time. From Heathrow, allow a minimum of 90 minutes between scheduled landing and any fixed commitment in central London. From Gatwick, 100 minutes. These are floors, not averages. An international arrival with immigration queues, a delayed baggage belt, and moderate traffic can easily use all of that time.

Understand What "Meet and Greet" Actually Means

A genuine meet-and-greet service means your chauffeur is inside the arrivals hall, before the exit barriers, with a name board clearly visible. This is distinct from a "kerbside" service where the driver waits outside in the pick-up lane. The inside option involves an airport access fee paid by the operator — ask specifically whether your service includes this. For passengers who do not know an airport well, or who are jet-lagged after long-haul, the difference in experience is significant.

Request Waiting Time Inclusion in Your Quote

Standard professional chauffeur services include a defined amount of complimentary waiting time after landing — typically 60 minutes for international flights and 45 minutes for domestic or European routes. Confirm exactly how much waiting time is included in your quoted fare before booking. Some lower-cost operators charge per-minute waiting fees that can substantially increase the final invoice for any arrival with minor delays.

Know London's 2026 Road Charges

Passengers do not typically pay road charges directly — but these charges are absorbed into fares and affect routing. The Congestion Charge (£18/day as of January 2026, weekdays 7am–6pm and weekends 12pm–6pm) applies to vehicles entering central London. ULEZ (£12.50/day) covers all 33 London boroughs — however, all modern luxury fleet vehicles (Mercedes, BMW, Range Rover from current generations) are Euro 6 diesel or modern petrol, and are therefore ULEZ-compliant with no charge. Confirm with your chauffeur service whether road charges are included in your quoted fare or added on top.
